Course Registration Regulations

Course registration per semester is carried out as follows:

Students of the D.C.T.C. may register only for courses of the current semester in which they are enrolled, as well as for courses from previous semesters that they have not yet passed. They may not register for courses from semesters – years higher than the one in which they are enrolled.

In detail:

  • Students in the 1st and 2nd semesters of their studies (first year) may (are required to) register for the four (4) Compulsory (C) courses, plus one (1) Compulsory Elective (CE) course offered in each semester (a total of five courses in each semester of the first year).
  • Students in the 3rd and 4th semesters of their studies (second year) may register for a maximum of seven (7) courses. They may (are required to) register for the four (4) Compulsory (C) courses, plus the one (1) Compulsory Elective (CE) course offered in each semester of the second year, as well as two (2) additional courses, either from those offered in the current semester (of the second year) or in a previous semester (of the first year) which they have not passed.
  • Students in the 5th and 6th semesters of their studies (third year) may register for a maximum of seven (7) courses. They may (are required to) register for the two (2) Compulsory (C) courses, plus the four (4) Compulsory Elective (CE) courses offered in each semester of the third year, as well as one (1) additional course, either from those offered in the current semester (of the third year) or in a previous semester (of the first or second year) which they have not passed.
  • Students in the 7th and 8th semesters of their studies (fourth year) may register for a maximum of seven (7) courses. They may (are required to) register for the six (6) Compulsory Elective (CE) courses offered in each semester of the fourth year, as well as one (1) additional course, either from those offered in the current semester (of the fourth year) or in a previous semester (of the first, second or third year) which they have not passed.

An exception is the second (2nd) and subsequent registration of the Dissertation (D) {which the first (1st) time is registered normally within the total number of courses permitted to be registered, whereas from the second (2nd) time onwards it is registered as an additional (extra) course}. The Dissertation (D) is registered for a minimum of two consecutive semesters, and continues to be registered in each subsequent semester until it is presented.

  • Students who have completed the normal (four-year) duration of their studies and are in the ninth (9th) semester of their studies and above (fifth year and above) may register for a maximum of nine (9) courses (a total of nine courses). Courses from previous study semesters (of the normal four (4) years of attendance) which they either never registered for or have not passed.

Students of the D.C.T.C. who choose to register for courses from the institutional Catalogue offered by other Departments of the same School or by Departments of other Schools of the Institution (which count towards the award of the degree exclusively as compulsory elective courses), corresponding at most to ten per cent (10%) of the total number of credit units (ECTS) required for the successful completion of the programme of study, should be very careful in their selection of institutional Catalogue courses, so that both the teaching units (TU) and the credit units (CU - ECTS) of these courses {in relation to the Compulsory Elective (CE) courses which they will not register for from the D.C.T.C. programme of study} suffice to make up the necessary number of teaching units (TU) and credit units (CU - ECTS) required for the award of the D.C.T.C. degree, namely at least 132 TU and at least 240 CU (ECTS).

Students of the D.C.T.C. who choose to register from the special category of courses offered by departments of the School of Social Sciences and included in the D.C.T.C. programme of study, should be very careful in their selection of these particular courses, so that both the teaching units (TU) and the credit units (CU - ECTS) of these courses suffice to make up the necessary number of teaching units (TU) and credit units (CU - ECTS) required for the award of the D.C.T.C. degree, namely at least 132 TU and at least 240 CU (ECTS).

Compulsory attendance of Informatics laboratory courses

Furthermore, for the successful completion of the following courses, in addition to the assessment criteria set by the instructors at the beginning of the semester, compulsory attendance of the laboratory component by students is required. These courses are as follows:

  • Introduction to Programming
  • Object-Oriented Programming I
  • Object-Oriented Programming II
  • Multimedia Technology
  • Internet Technologies

Students who have not passed -at least once- and re-register for the above courses, in the event that they have not completed the required number of laboratory attendances, are obliged - in addition to the assessment criteria set by the instructors - in order to be entitled to participate in the final examinations, to pass a supplementary examination of the laboratory component, which will take place during the last week of the teaching semester of the courses.

Course Programme per Semester

The programme of study of the D.C.T.C. has been structured on the basis of international standards for programmes of study in the interdisciplinary field of Cultural Informatics. As the scientific areas covered by the Department are constantly evolving, the content of the courses taught is continually renewed, and new courses are introduced, so that the Department ensures both a sound and high-level educational process and scientific research.
